When a vocabulary has only a single kanji without any hiragana connected to it, it usually uses the kunyomi reading. However, with numbers, it is an exception. When a number is written, it's going to be the onyomi reading. Just make sure to remember this exception as it is used quite a lot.
If you take four from ten, you have six.
